What is Freemasonry ?

Freemasonry is a world wide, class-free initiation order that promotes the universal values of humanism and human rights, such as respect of and tolerance to every fellow human being, regardless of religion, political conviction, ethno-cultural background, gender or sexual preference.

Gradual initiation is an essential part of the masonic method because we believe not all “secrets” can be disclosed at once, exactly like not all perceivable knowledge can be aquired at once. The wonder that inherently goes with an initiation ritual along with the accompanying symbolism, leaves a permanent impression upon the initiated. Therefore a ritual initiation requires that knowledge is not transmitted in an unstructured manner but remains closed until the moment of initiation.

Freemasons meet in so called lodges. In irregular Freemasonry there are masculine, feminine and mixed lodges.

"Freemasons presume the makeability of man and of the world, as long as humans are prepared to work on themselves adogmatically and in full freedom of conscience. Creating brotherhood among individuals with diverse backgrounds and visions requires transcending whatever divides them and methodically searching for what unites them."

Marnix van Sint Aldegonde

Grand Lodge of Belgium

The lodge Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde belongs to the Grand Lodge of Belgium (GLB). The latter is a so-called obedience, an overarching structure that unites lodges with common rituals, symbols and cultural elements.

The GLB unites masculine lodges that accept free, honest and tolerant people of all philosophical and religious convictions as members. Lodges that are under the GLB’s purview value free interpretation of symbols, and respect the customs of traditional Freemasonry.
